Reveal Marketing Research study in partnership with ProBCA: Seismic safety and building durability are essential for the living space
Reveal Market Resources Study No. 164
Bucharest, August 27, 2024. The rapidly evolving construction industry continues to prioritize durability when it comes to living space, as tenants want long-term security and protection against earthquakes or bad weather.
According to Reveal Marketing Research’s latest survey, construction specialists emphasize the importance of rigorous design and the choice of appropriate building materials, such as AAC, in achieving this goal.
The strength of a construction is based on rigorous design and the right choice of building materials
For 81% of Romanians, the durability of the construction is the second most important aspect when considering a living space, after the available budget.
In the current study, specialists emphasize that rigorous design, which takes into account factors such as seismic vibrations, local climate and soil characteristics, can prevent major structural problems and significantly extend the lifespan of buildings, reducing the need for repair interventions and the consumption of resources.
“If we refer to specific processes that aim to maximize the durability of buildings over time, we are first and foremost referring to the materials used, plus the resistance structure, and these must be adapted to the specific conditions of the area where the building is located, so that in the end there are no unpleasant surprises such as cracks in the walls, the appearance of mold, etc.” Lelia D., Building Design Engineer
Extreme events such as earthquakes are a sensitive topic among Romanians, with 1 in 2 saying they are worried about the resilience of their home in the event of a large earthquake.
57% of specialists are of the opinion that Romanians are worried or very worried about the possibility of an earthquake with a large magnitude (similar to the 1977 earthquake), especially those over 45 years of age (65%).
According to experts, structural and strength elements such as supporting columns, beams and the use of high-quality materials such as durable concrete and AAC provide superior stability and durability of the building.
“AAC is a lighter material compared to brick. It is important to mention that the strength of the building is not ensured by the masonry material, but by the structure’s strength through the use of supporting pillars (…), and if we talk about a potential earthquake, I believe that a lighter building that complies with all building regulations, involves less risk” Lelia D., Building Design Engineer.
Durability defines the quality and safety of masonry materials
Turning our attention to masonry materials, construction specialists describe AAC as a material that offers remarkable strength and durability, being able to successfully withstand not only the passage of time, but also harsh conditions such as exposure to fire or other extreme weather conditions.
“The durability is determined by the materials used in the construction, that’s clear. Everything starts from there. If you use materials with long-lasting characteristics, you’ll have a durable building, and AAC performs very well in this regard. The buildings are guaranteed from the design phase; you build them to last 100 years.” Ciprian D., Structural Engineer
Additionally, from the study conducted last year, we learned that 56% of specialists who prefer to build with AAC state that they choose this material because it is durable, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the previous assessment in 2022.
