Reveal Marketing Research: The present and future of sustainable development in construction
We can say with certainty that sustainable development is a megatrend and a challenge for contemporary society, which faces the ever-increasing threat of exhausting the Earth’s resources.
In this context, Reveal Marketing Research carried out a nationwide study to understand what sustainable development in construction means and how important it is for Romanians.
Sustainable development – what exactly is it and why do we need it?
The concept of sustainable development encompasses several dimensions based on the idea that natural resources are limited and that humanity’s role is to protect them, to use them carefully to meet their needs and to ensure that they are sufficient and for future generations. Which means that a sustainable society knows how to be responsible, focused on protecting the environment and maintaining the balance between its various (eco)systems, while ensuring economic growth and development.
- 66% of Romanians have confidence in the efficiency of sustainable and ecological construction materials
- 75% of respondents believe that sustainability is as important as comfort in the process of building and using a home

If we refer to the attributes of the building materials used, 2 out of 3 Romanians declare that they would have a lot of confidence in building a house with the most durable and ecological material, especially those aged between 18 and 24 (70% ) but also those who currently live in brick (71%) or AAC (68%) houses.
For 52% of the respondents, it is noted that it is important that the building materials are friendly to the environment. Moreover, 40% of Romanians declare that they have chosen a sustainable and energy-efficient building material, which helps to reduce carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
In the Romanians’ view, the ideal house is built in harmony with the surrounding environment
75% of respondents believe that sustainability is as important as comfort when it comes to the construction process of a house or apartment building, with the percentage reaching the threshold of 81% in the case of construction professionals.
Regarding the Romanians’ vision of the ideal home, a third of them believe that it should be environmentally friendly in the process of construction and use (28%), a significantly higher percentage being registered in the case of young people under 35 (35%) who, in general, show a higher interest in protecting the environment.
Specialists encourage ecological initiatives in construction
Currently, over half of the specialists in the field are largely concerned with ecological issues in construction, for example the issue of carbon emissions (53%) or the use of non-renewable energy sources (52%).
