Reveal Marketing Research study in partnership with Simth: Willing or unwilling, 7 out of 10 Romanians are craftsmen in their own homes
The most recent study conducted by Reveal Marketing Research in partnership with Simth, a customized design furniture company, aimed to evaluate the interest of Romanians in taking care of the procedures related to the arrangement and renovation of their homes themselves, in the context in which such DIY activities have become increasingly popular, whether we refer to them from the perspective of an attractive alternative to recreational activities or as a way to save money.
- 7 out of 10 Romanians use to carry out repair and interior design activities in their own home, and the main places targeted are the kitchen (55%) and the bathroom (53%)
- Videos on YouTube (45%), websites of DIY stores (40%) and advice from acquaintances (40%) are the main sources of information that Romanians turn to in order to handle the arrangements and renovations of their own homes on their own
- 9 out of 10 Romanians prefer to go to physical stores to purchase the DIY products they need
More than two-thirds of Romanians (70%) take care of various repair and interior design activities in the house by themselves, and the main places targeted are the kitchen (55%) and the bathroom (53%)
According to data from the Reveal Marketing Research study, more than two-thirds of Romanians (70%) declare that they usually carry out repair and interior design activities in their own homes, and as expected, men are more involved in carrying them out compared to women (79% vs. 62%).
Also, as a general trend, we observe a gradual increase in interest in doing DIY works personally with age, the least interested being young people aged between 18-24 (54%), and on the opposite pole the most involved being mature people between 45-55 years old (80%).
Regarding the types of repairs and arrangements, most of the Romanians performed such activities in the kitchen (55%) or in the bathroom (53%). Repairs or arrangements in the yard (39%) are next in the top of preferences, these being mentioned to a significantly higher extent by both mature people over 55 (47%) and rural residents (60% vs. 26% urban area).
Repairs and improvements in the hall (34%), in the living room (31%) or on the terrace/ balcony (30%) were mentioned to a lesser extent by Romanians.

Most of the Romanians renovate or arrange their houses by themselves with the help of information from the Internet
Turning our attention to the methods of information, among the top preferences of those who are used to dealing with the procedures related to the arrangement and renovation of the house themselves are YouTube videos (45%), DIY store websites (40%) and advice from acquaintances/friends (40%).
At a closer look we can see that DIY store websites are preferred to a greater extent by men (44% vs. 35% women) and by those aged between 45-55 (49%), which is also the most active age group in terms of DIY activities.
Other alternatives that Romanians turn to for information are the advice of their parents/family (33%), especially in the case of young people between 18-24 years old (48%), Google searches (34%), requesting information directly from the store, from the seller (30%) or social networks (27%).
Those who prefer to request information directly in the store are rather mature people over 55 (38%) and those from rural areas (35% vs. 27% urban), both categories registering lower scores in terms of using online information tools compared to the total sample. On the other hand, social networks are mentioned to a greater extent by women (30% vs. 24% men).
If we refer to the method of purchasing the products needed to carry out the desired repairs and arrangements, 90% of Romanians prefer to go to the physical store, this choice facilitating direct interaction with the products and the possibility of asking the staff in the store for advice.
