Reveal Marketing Research Study on the General Population & Household Census: The National Census should be organized every 5 years or even more often
- Up until 07.05.2022, over 6.5 million Romanians have completed the national census online questionnaire;
- The method preferred by Romanians living in urban areas in order to participate in the census is self-census;
- Almost 80% of the participants in the self-census stage will take advantage of the extra day off offered by the Romanian state;
The general population and housing census is in full swing in Romania, after the one-year delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Self-census, the first stage of the census of population and housing, will end on May 15 and starting with the next day the reviewers will go out and visit the addresses where no online questionnaire was sent.
According to the latest data provided by the National Institute of Statistics, over 6.5 millions of Romanians have completed the self-census procedure so far.
The latest study conducted by Reveal Marketing Research shows that most Romanians living in urban areas who did not participate in the census so far intend to compete the self-census questionnaire until mid-May.
As regards the intention to participate in the census, Romanians living in urban areas declare in proportion of 88% that they want to participate, 68% of them preferring self-census method.
The employees living in urban areas plan to benefit of the paid day off granted by the Romanian state.
As for the day off for self-census, 74% of respondents mentioned that they intend to request the day off, while 26% of them mentioned that they do not want or it’s not the case to request it (e.g. pensioners, unemployed, etc.).
Given that it’s been 11 years since the last general population and housing census was conducted, Romanians living in urban areas believe that the census should be organized every 5 years or even more often.
More than 3 quarters of Romanians living in urban areas believe that census should be organized more often than is now happening. The increased mobility of the population, the fast development of the economy and social changes could lead to a greater need for Romanians to get a clearer picture of the population structure, updated as often as possible.
Romanians living in urban areas perceive the state institutions as the the main beneficiaries of the census. 75% of them mentioned administrative-territorial, governmental and public institutions as beneficiaries of the census organization, while only 50% of them consider the general population as a beneficiary.
Among the advantages of organizing the census, Romanians listed, in the top, a more relevant overview of the population structure (65%) and the possibility of accurately calculating the population density for technical reasons – utilities consumption, public spaces, etc. (64%).
Distrust of the population in public institutions (64%) and reluctance of the population to provide voluntary information (61%) are considered to be the main barriers in the organization of the census. Technical aspects of the census, such as organizational costs (36%) or high time to complete the questionnaire (23%), are perceived to a lesser extent as disadvantages of the procedure.
